Pushing Carts

It was 115 degrees, I was wearing dress slacks, a dress shirt and tie. I didn’t know how to do anything, I was only 17. My first job was at a grocery store in Goodyear, Ariz. I hated pushing carts. It was so hot, I can still remember the heat coming through my steel toe boots. We took hour long turns in the middle of the day.  Women were excused from pushing carts altogether, so the job fell on us guys.  I developed amazing leg strength.

When I left Safeway nine years ago,  I vowed to never push carts again. As I develop more and more into my career, the thought of pushing carts seems further and further away. It sounds bad, like I am an elitist but I worked my way up from the bottom and so should everyone else.
